Learning how to measure deer antlers helps you understand where a buck's score comes from. The process is more detailed than simply measuring the widest part of the rack: a typical whitetail score combines spread credit, both main beams, qualifying point lengths and four circumference measurements on each side.

Tools you need to measure a rack

  • A flexible, non-stretch measuring cable or a one-quarter-inch flexible steel tape
  • A ruler or yardstick for reading lengths transferred from a cable
  • Masking tape and a pencil for marking measurement locations
  • The correct score chart for a typical or non-typical whitetail
  • A calculator for checking totals

Place the rack on a stable surface and work methodically. Record measurements in inches and eighths of an inch rather than rounding early.

1. Identify the main beams and normal points

Before measuring, trace each main beam from the antler burr at the base to the beam tip. Identify the normal points that rise from the top of the main beam and mark their baselines. The brow tine is normally recorded as G-1, followed by G-2, G-3 and additional qualifying normal points toward the beam tip. Points that do not follow the typical pattern may need to be recorded separately as abnormal points.

2. Measure the inside spread

Measure the greatest distance between the inner edges of the two main beams, keeping the line perpendicular to the centerline of the skull. Do not substitute the outside spread. Under Boone and Crockett-style rules, the credited inside spread cannot exceed the length of the longer main beam.

3. Measure each main beam

Follow the outer curve of each main beam from the lowest outside edge of the burr to the beam tip. Keep the cable or flexible tape centered along the beam's curve. Measure the right and left beams separately; a straight-line measurement will understate their true curved lengths.

4. Measure every qualifying tine

Measure each normal point from its established baseline on the top of the main beam to the tip of the point, following the outside curve. Creating a consistent baseline is important because measuring from the side or bottom of the beam can add length incorrectly. Record corresponding right and left points on separate lines so differences remain visible.

5. Take four circumference measurements per side

Mass is measured around the main beam at four designated locations on each antler. The first circumference is taken at the smallest point between the burr and G-1. The remaining measurements are generally taken at the smallest circumference between successive normal points. There are always four mass measurements per side; the current score chart explains where to place later measurements when a rack has fewer normal points.

6. Calculate the gross estimate

Add the credited inside spread, both main-beam lengths, all qualifying normal point lengths and all eight circumference measurements. For non-typical scoring, abnormal points are handled according to the relevant score chart. A net typical score also accounts for differences between corresponding measurements on the two sides.
